Looking at karate from a different martial art perspective is
certainly eye opening, as the attendees of Mr. Veziris' seminar on Saturday,
February 21, 2004, can
attest. Mr. Veziris - a 6th degree Judo Black
Belt and Mr. Peacock's Judo teacher - delivered an energy blasting seminar to
complement Mr. White's seminar last month.
In his opening Mr. Veziris emphasized that good entries are
explosive, getting your options in first. Some key ideas to achieve this is to
getting the other side off balance. Be
creative. Look for opportunities.
Students were able to practice Judo fundamentals studying the
hip wheel Koshi Guruma. Warming up with rolls and balance practice, Mr. Veziris
moved on to light falls. Participants realized the
importance of a tight grip while maintaining loose arms, and learned to throw by being thrown.
Thank you, Mr. Veziris, for a vivid and insightful seminar!

The beauty of knowing more than one martial art is not just
to understand and recognize possible attacks early, but also to "borrow" from
other martial arts to complement your own martial art roots. The combination of
this seminar with
Mr. White's presentation on "Kenpo Counters to Judo Entries"
is a powerful addition to each students' knowledgebase. Both seminars emphasized
to "think outside the box" and develop an open mind, spirit and body.
