Technique of
the Month - May 2004
Shielding
Hammer
(left hooking punch
defense)
From a natural stance:
- Step back into a right neutral bow with a right outward external
block; the left hand covers the midsection.
- Deliver a right inward diagonal raking back knuckle to the
opponent's nose followed by a right dipping elbow to the opponent's solar
plexus; the left hand covers high.
Beginner Student Questions
- What other attack(s) could this technique work against?
- Why is the elbow delivered in a dipping manner instead of a
traditional outward (horizontal) line?
Advanced Student Questions
- Why is it important to stress the attack as a
"hooking" punch?
- What beginner technique before this one
introduces the inward dialog knuckle rake? What does that rake (in the
previous technique) accomplish? Why is it done in this technique?
