Last Month
We had our last outside special
this year with a seminar on the Kenpo Staff Set. About 15 MVKS Students
participated on a beautiful Saturday morning to learn this very cool form that
was developed as a thesis form by one of Ed Parkers Black Belts, Chuck Sullivan.
Apparently Mr Parker liked the form enough to include it in his curriculum, and
we train it here at MVKS every so often to preserve it for future generations.
Every time I go over this set, I learn a little more about the versatility of
this seemingly impractical weapon.
This Month...
Our Black Belt Candidates
took their 2nd of three exams on October 4th, and 7 of the
8 candidates passed, showing some real improvement since their last exam. This
group has impressed me with the work ethic they have shown in their practice
sessions in the back room. Unfortunately, one didn’t make it, but I think this
provides a great opportunity for her to work on the finer details necessary to
advance to the Black belt level. I am sure this Candidate will be more than
ready when the next round of testing comes around. As for the others,
congratulations to all of you! Keep up the good work! You’re almost there!!
The 10th annual
New England Chinese Karate Federation Kenpo Camp is scheduled for October 11th
in Holden, Mass. It’s hard to believe it’s been ten years since the very first
Camp was held, coincidentally, in Holden Mass. I am really looking forward to
this one. The subject throughout the day will be focused on the different entry
drills and techniques within the Kenpo system, and the relationships between
them. Instructors for the day are Mr Harry Grimm, 4th Black, Mr
Gaudette, 5th Black, yours truly, and of course, what Camp would be
complete without our leader, Mr White? Going to the Camp?? The carpool/ caravan
leaves MVKS Saturday at noon sharp.
THE WORLD FAMOUS MVKS HALLOWEEN COSTUME PARTY IS
SCHEDULED FOR SATURDAY, OCTOBER 25TH, FROM 10 - 12:00am.!!!
Join us for one of the best events at MVKS!!
There’ll be a costume parade, ( in the fog! ) with prizes awarded for best,
funniest, and scariest costumes. There’ll be game stations throughout the
school, as you can try your luck at pin the stem on the pumpkin, bobbing for
apples, charades, a nose marble race, magic tricks, and of course a piñata
filled w/ lots of goodies!! Of course this event can’t be a success without
YOU! Volunteers are needed to bring in their favorite treats, and to help clean
up at the end. Please sign up for the party so that we can prepare for you, and
get ready for a great time!! The sign up sheet is on the bulletin board. I
WONDER WHAT THE MVKS STAFF IS GOING TO DRESS UP AS THIS YEAR???

-The next Black Candidate
test is scheduled for Saturday, November 1st@ 12:30. If all goes
well, we’ll be awarding them their Black Belts in a special ceremony Friday,
November 14th.
- It seems like it comes
earlier every year, but our annual Christmas Catalog shopping week is scheduled
for the week of November 17th. Parents can shop for the Karate
student in their family while they’re in class. Staff members will be on hand to
offer suggestions. This is usually the best time to save $$ on all your training
equipment needs.

Story of Frogs
A group of frogs was
traveling through the woods, and two of them fell into a deep pit. All the other
frogs gathered around the pit. When they saw how deep the pit was, they told the
unfortunate frogs they would never get out.
The two frogs ignored the
comments and tried to jump up out of the pit. The other frogs kept telling them
to stop, that they were as good as dead. Finally, one of the frogs took heed to
what the other frogs were saying and simply gave up. He fell down and died. The
other frog continued to jump as hard as he could.
Once again, the crowd of
frogs yelled at him to stop the pain and suffering and just die. He jumped even
harder and finally made it out. When he got out, the other frogs asked him, "Why
did you continue jumping. Didn't you hear us?" The frog explained to them that
he was deaf. He thought they were encouraging him the entire time.
This story teaches two
lessons:
1. There is power of life
and death in the tongue. An encouraging word to someone who is down can lift
them up and help them make it through the day.
2. A destructive word to someone who is down can be what it takes to kill them.
Be careful of what you say. Speak life to those who cross your path.
The power of words...it is
sometimes hard to understand that an encouraging word can go such a long way.
Anyone can speak words that tend to rob another of the spirit to continue in
difficult times. Special is the individual who will take the time to encourage
another. Be special to others.
Do not underestimate the power of encouragement.
