Last Month
We didn’t have a
newsletter! We did, however, have a couple of AWESOME events on the lawn in July
and August. In July we held our annual obstacle course and about 25 students
came down to challenge themselves in this very difficult and fun course. Most
everyone ran the course twice, improving on their 1st time. Some of
you even went through the course 3 and 4 times. I wish I had that kind of
energy! In August we held a sparring event called Spar Wars, in which the
beginner students got to spar against the advanced students. We did some drills
against multiple attackers as well as learning to integrate our Kenpo techniques
into our sparring routine. In the end we lined up all the Beginners on one side
of the lawn, and lined up all the Advanced students on the other side, and had
them charge at each other in a massive, 25 person free-for-all. It was really
fun, and I had to laugh because it reminded me of an old epic war movie, only as
a comedy.
We also held our bi-annual Black
Belt pre-test in August, and I’d like to congratulate Dante Aguayo, William
Bernard, Jaimie Cates, Shannon Hayes, Nicole, Joshua and Dominic Manha, and Erin
Quinlan for earning their Black Belt Candidates Belt, a Belt that is ˝ white and
˝ black, signifying that they’ll be testing on all material required for Black
Belt from White to Black, for the next three months. Join me in wishing them the
best of luck during this exciting testing process.
This Month...
Staff Set Seminar!!
Anyone interested in learning the Kenpo
Staff Set, mark your calendars for Saturday, September 13th on the
side lawn from 10:00 - 12:00. There is a sign up sheet on the bulletin board,
and if you need a staff for this seminar, you need to order it before September
6th.
I’m having surgery!
Anyone who knows me knows that I have
been suffering from a condition called plantar fasciitis, a condition that
causes significant foot pain. After seven years of conventional treatments that
were unsuccessful, I have been advised by my podiatrist to have an outpatient
procedure done called microdebridation. It is a procedure in which a needle is
stuck into the Achilles tendon at the heel in a grid-like pattern, while
transmitting radio waves through the end. Apparently this breaks up the scar
tissue on the tendon, encourages healing, allows it to stretch more freely and,
it doesn’t affect the structural integrity of the foot. This treatment has been
performed on many people with conditions like mine, with a success rate of 95%.
It calls for me to be off my feet for a few days, and I’ll be resuming normal
activities in 1 - 3 months. An Olympic gymnast had it done and was performing in
a nationally televised event 3 months later. I was told this treats the cause,
not the symptoms. Mr Clarke will be running the school for me in my absence, and
I am confident he will do an outstanding job as he always does.
