Last Month
What a month we
had! On May 9th and 10th, we participated in our annual
Kenpo Camp, and learned some extraordinary things that we’ve already started
putting into the curriculum.
We promoted 6
new Black Belts on the 16th, and had a well attended belt ceremony
and party for them afterwards. It was nice to be able to stop for a moment and
reflect with all their families on the growth this young group has demonstrated
in their quest to becoming Black Belts. Now the real fun begins for them, and I
look forward to teaching them on this exciting new journey. On a personal note,
one of the new Black Belts was my daughter Mackenzie, and this means that all of
my kids now have earned Black Belts. Kinda neat.
Due to the preparation I needed to
teach at the Kenpo camp, I could not really prepare our school this year for the
Spring Gala demonstration, so, we winged it. 18 MVKS students volunteered for
this impromptu demo, and we had representatives from all of the classes at MVKS,
from age 4 to 74. Tiny Tiger to Black Belt. That was the theme of the demo, was
to point out that Karate training is good for EVERYONE, and the benefits are
many. Since it was the end of our promotion week, we had everybody demonstrate
the forms and techniques that they just tested for, and they all did a great
job. Also helping with the demo was my friend Alice Kolb. Alice comes
religiously to my morning classes and currently wears a Red belt. She is one of
the most dedicated students I have. She is also 74 years young. Those of you who
have never met Alice should make a point to. She is truly an inspiration.
This Month...
It’s Dads
Turn!
In
appreciation for Dad and all that he does, Dads can train for free for the month
of June. Dads can take part in the beginner adult program, which meets on Monday
and Thursday evenings from 8:00 - 8:45 and Saturday morning from 11:30 -
12:15.Karate training is a great way to get in shape, learn self defense, and
have something in common with your kids! See me if you have any more questions.
Outside
Classes!
Weather
permitting, we will be having outside classes on Saturdays, and an occasional
weeknight. Students can wear their street clothes with their MVKS t-shirts to
class, along with their belt, and shoes may be worn. We’ll try to keep some on
hand, but please consider bringing bug spray. Those black flies can be
relentless.
Summer

Our first session of Summer
Camp is this month, from June 23rd to June 27th. There
will be no day classes that week. There are still 4 spots available for session
2, 7/ 28 - 8/01. Register before July 1st and I’ll take $25. off the
cost.Next Month

Other News and Notes
-The bi-annual step exam is
scheduled for Saturday, June 7th. All Black Belts that meet their
point requirements are expected to attend. Good Luck! All Black belts who missed
the point requirements will have their points roll over to the next step in
December.
-Are you going on vacation?
Let us know so that we can devise a plan that works for you so that we can keep
you on track. Did you know that we offer free 15 min privates
( they‘re a great easy way
to pick up a technique you missed ), as well as paid privates in ½ hour and 1
hour segments. A ½ hour segment is worth one class point, and an hour is worth 3
points. Hour segments may be shared by up to two people.
-Now that Summer is finally
here, it’s not uncommon to see many kids coming to class that have been barefoot
all day. Please help keep our school clean by washing your feet before class.
-I did the math, and since MVKS opened 17 years
ago June 3rd, I have taught approximately
16, 880 karate classes. At that rate, I should
reach the 20,000 class mark by our 20th anniversary.
If you think that’s a lot, try to imagine how
many MY teacher has put in.

The
Buddha And The Abuse Story
It is said that on an occasion when the Buddha was teaching
a group of people, he found himself on the receiving end of a fierce outburst of
abuse from a bystander, who was for some reason very angry.
The Buddha listened patiently while the stranger vented his
rage, and then the Buddha said to the group and to the stranger, "If someone
gives a gift to another person, who then chooses to decline it, tell me, who
would then own the gift? The giver or the person who refuses to accept the
gift?"
"The giver," said the group after a little thought. "Any
fool can see that," added the angry stranger.
"Then it follows, does it not," said the Buddha, "Whenever
a person tries to abuse us, or to unload their anger on us, we can each choose
to decline or to accept the abuse; whether to make it ours or not. By our
personal response to the abuse from another, we can choose who owns and keeps
the bad feelings."
