LAST  MONTH ...

Spar Wars!

We held a very successful sparring event last month. Over 35 students came down for a night of open sparring and related drills. There was a great mix of ages and ranks. I was very impressed with how well everybody put the drills into place during the sparring segments. We definitely will have another one of these events very soon.

 Summer Camp Registration Day

Our first summer camp session is full, and there are only 4 spots left for the second session. Don’t delay, these spots will fill on a first come, first served basis.

THIS MONTH ...

Family/ Buddy Week Scheduled

Attention all Moms, Dads, Sisters, Brothers and friends of MVKS. Please join us for a week of martial arts fun during week 3 of this cycle. Get in on the Karate experience as you work side by side with your MVKS member learning various kicks, punches, forms and self defense techniques. We have a fun week planned with a women’s self -defense class scheduled that Wednesday, ( check out the flyer in the lobby ) and we’ll wrap up the week by going to a Manchester Monarchs game on Saturday night. So come on down, we’d love to have you!

 Manchester Monarchs

MVKS is going to see the Manchester Monarchs on Saturday February 23rd. If you’d like to go, there is a sign up sheet in the lobby, and we’ll be collecting money for tickets until Saturday, February 9th.

 Black Belt Pre - Test

It’s that time again! Black Belt testing starts March 1st, and we’re having a pre- test to qualify people on February 16th at 12:30. All 1st degree Brown Belts who have the minimum stripes ( 5 ), and class points ( 50 ) are encouraged to attend. All students who score an 85% or better will earn their Black belt Candidates’ rank and start testing for their Black belt! Good Luck Everyone!

Stormy Weather and Closing

Now that it’s Winter I need to remind everyone that the school will close during stormy weather. If you’re not sure if we are having class, please wait to call until about 45 minutes before the first class starts   ( usually around 5:15 ). If the machine doesn’t say we’re closed, we are open. I will also notify the radio station WZID 95.7, and they make their announcements for closings a couple of times an hour.

It’s an old form, going back to the early days of Kenpo Karate, and it’s mentioned in Mr. Parkers 1st book, Secrets of Chinese Karate, published in 1963! Look for the sign up sheet. This will be a fun class!

Some Food For Thought

The stranger and the gingernuts story

(making assumptions, think before you act, different perspectives)

At the airport after a tiring business trip a lady's return flight was delayed. She went to the airport shop, bought a book, a coffee and a small packet containing five gingernut biscuits. The airport was crowded and she found a seat in the lounge, next to a stranger. After a few minutes' reading she became absorbed in her book. She took a biscuit from the packet and began to drink her coffee. To her great surprise, the stranger in the next seat calmly took one of the biscuits and ate it. Stunned, she couldn't bring herself to say anything, nor even to look at the stranger. Nervously she continued reading. After a few minutes she slowly picked up and ate the third biscuit. Incredibly, the stranger took the fourth gingernut and ate it, then to the woman's amazement, he picked up the packet and offered her the last biscuit. This being too much to tolerate, the lady angrily picked up her belongings, gave the stranger an indignant scowl and marched off to the boarding gate, where her flight was now ready. Flustered and enraged, she reached inside her bag for her boarding ticket, and found her unopened packet of gingernuts...

(Adapted from a suggestion submitted by S Frost. Apparently the story appears in a variety of urban legends dating from at least 30 years ago, and is also described in Douglas Adams' Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, book four, 1984, 'So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish'. Ack L Baldock.)
