Congratulations to Scott Dannewitz, Zachary Peacock and Nathan Sanford for passing their last of three Black Belt exams on May 6th. These fine young men did themselves proud and passed with flying colors. Join us Friday, May 12, at 7:00 p.m. as I will present these excellent students their 1st Degree Black Belts. The night will start with a speech, a demonstration, a belt presentation, and a pizza party afterwards. Join us as we celebrate this very special occasion.
Join us Saturday, May 20, as Mont Vernon celebrates Spring with its annual Spring Gala. As always, MVKS will be marching in the parade, and instead of a Karate demo, we will be conduction a break-a-thon fundraiser to support the McCollom field restoration project. The town citizens need to raise $20,000 to create their field of dreams, and we are going to do our best to help this cause! Our goal is $2,000. There will be boards available for the public to break for one dollar, as well as photos of the break to buy to commemorate the event. We will also collect throughout the day for "super breaks". All donations are due by Friday, May 19. If you are marching in the Gala Parade or attend the break-a-thon, I kindly ask that you wear clean, fully patched uniform. No t-shirts, please. See me for more info and if you need more fundraising sheet.
The new t-shirt order deadline is Saturday, May 13. Money is due with your order. This year's colors are navy blue with red imprint, to go with our school's new look. Order yours today! The order form is on the bulletin board.
On June 3rd, MVKS will celebrate 15 years of Karate excellence in Mont Vernon! This is truly cause for celebration. Join us on Friday, June 16, for that celebration. Look for more info in the next monthly newsletter.
The Spring step exam for Black belts is scheduled for Saturday, June 10th. Check your cards and get your points to qualify! If you are a few points shy, schedule a private or two, so that you may participate.
At MVKS, I try very hard to keep our cost competitive while offering the best instruction possible. Did you know that the national average for monthly tuition is $145? Did you also know that the average family discount is 10%? While we're not giving our lessons away here at MVKS, I really do pride myself at having a family affordable school that produces darn good Black belts.
There are, however, some things that a student needs to purchase along with the training lessons, to be prepared for class. Here is a list:
|
A fully patched uniform (crest, assoc. patch, universal pattern, an US flag (as available) |
By the time you are a Purple Belt, you should also have:
|
A full set of sparring gear and a mouthpiece |
By the time you are a Red Belt, you should also have:
|
A pair of escrima sticks and a wooden training knife |
By the time you are a Black Belt, you should also have:
|
A 6' bo staff. |
Check with your instructor before purchasing any of these items. He or she can help you make the right choices to suit your needs.
Mr. White informed me that Guru Al McLuckie will be in New England next month doing a seminar tour for the NECKF studios. Look for the flyer and sign-up sheet and reserve your space early! Mr. McLuckie's seminars are always exciting and fill up fast. If you have a suggestion as to what material you'd like to see covered, please let me now and we'll try to make it happen!

Now that warm weather has arrived, we can all look forward to outside classes. There is not much that I like better than training barefoot in the grass! We'll have some special sparring classes, as well as the now famous MVKS obstacle course! We'll let the forecast dictate when these classes are held, and try to give at least a few days notice.

The word sensei, when translated, does not mean teacher, as many believe, but it means "One who has lived before".
