Congratulations to Scott Dannewitz, Zachary Peacock, and Nathan Sanford for passing their Black Belt Pre-Test on Saturday, Feb. 18. Their hard work played off and now they begin their 3 month testing process, beginning Saturday, March 4th. During this 3 month period I encourage these people to dive into their training like they've never done before, and give themselves the best possible chance to earn their Black Belts. It is from this process I hope that they learn a very important lesson: A Black Belt isn't something you get, it is something you become. Good luck to all of you. I share with you the excitement of this very special time!
I'd like to thank all of the MVKS student who brought their friends to class during the week of Feb 20-25 to share the Karate experience. I have always thought of buddy week as the best way to grow a school, but more importantly, an opportunity to provide a strong reference to somebody as to what martial arts training is all about. It can be pretty confusing to somebody who has never taken a class with all of the different ways the media portrays martial arts, as well as all the different styles of training that are available. Hopefully, now when these people think of Karate, they will think of MVKS!
My Judo teacher, Mr. Chris Veziris, will be teaching a seminar here at MVKS on Thursday, March 16th, from 7:30 - 9:00 p.m. There will be no BB prep or Beg Adult classes held that night because of this special event. All children, Purple Belt and above, are invited to attend, as well as all adults. Class space will be limited, so reserve your spot today! A signup sheet is on the bulletin board. A full uniform is required.
Kickphotos USA will be coming for martial arts picture day. Mark your calendar for Saturday, April 22nd. Visit their web site (www.kickphotousa.com) to see their work and previous MVKS photos.
This year's Break-a-Thon will be to support the McCollum Field restoration.
I got an email from the Mont Vernon Recreation committee asking for help and/or donations to restore the McCollom baseball field next to the village school. Since we do an annual break-a-thon fundraiser for St. Judes Hospital every Spring, I thought we could focus our efforts this year on a local cause and help get that field up to shape.
Apparently the town needs to raise about $20,000 in donations to fund this project and I know MVKS can help! This year we are going to do our Break-a-Thon during the Mont Vernon Spring Gala. We'll collect donations per board one month prior to the event and have boards available for the public to buy (and break) for $1 each. We'll also raffle off some free lessons and maybe try to achieve a certain amount of money to have a "super break", where we'll try to match or beat the school record, which is 7 boards. In the past we raised about $1700 with our Break-a-Thon. I'd love if we could break the $2000 mark this year! I'm very excieted about this upcoming event, and if you have any ideas or suggestions, or can donate some time and help, I'd really appreciate it.
Look for more info next month, and lets give Mont Vernon a real Field of Dreams. A great movie - by the way.

What
motivates you? When you think about all the things that you do in your life, you may or may not realize that you are motivated to do them by two things: pleasure or pain.
If it is pain, then:
You're doing it because you ran out of time and the deadline is almost here! The fear of failure motivates you.
You're doing it because you're afraid that you'll be in trouble with someone if you don't get it done. That someone could be you.
You're doing it becaus if you don't get it done, you won't be able to do something else. Something maybe more enjoyable.
If it is pleasure:
You're doing it so that you'll have enough time before the deadline and can be prepared for any unexpected "surprises". The vision of a job well done motivates you.
You're doing it because someone will be very happy with you for doing it. That someone could be you.
You're doing it because you know you'll be able to do something else after. Something maybe more enjoyable.
Remember: The wise person makes it happen, the foolish person asks "What happened?"
