On Wednesday, January 11th, over 35 MVKS students geared up for Spar Wars and had a great time as they got to spar for an our and a half with their favorite sparring partners and some other members of the Studio not in their classes. The event went so well that I think we will have to hold it more often.
On Saturday, January 28th, Mr. Lee Wedlake, an 8th Degree Black Belt and my instructor's instructor, flew up from Florida to teach a couple of seminars for the NECKF SWAT members. Over 85 SWAT members came to this special event. Mr. White and the rest of the New England Board of Examiners also taught during this all day event. Best of all, this event was offered at NO COST for all of the NECKF SWAT team members as a show of appreciation for all of their dedication and generosity they give to their Studios. The theme throughout the day centered on the importance of being a teacher, and what it means to be a professional about it. Mr. Wedlake also gave a great seminar on the implications of Karate blows and ended the day with some questions and answers. As a surprise, Mr. White promoted me and a friend of mine, Mr. Bill Gaudette of Webster, MA, to 5th Degree Black Belt. It was a day I'll never forget, and I'd like to again thank all of the MVKS SWAT members who were able to make the time and share with me this very special day!
On Saturday, February 4, the back room was transformed into a movie theater for about 18 MVKS kids and their families for the showing of "Garfield, The Movie". A good time was had by all, and a special thanks to Mr. Smith, who was able to borrow a movie projector, and to the parents who stayed after to help clean. Most schools charge for an event like this, but I'm proud to say that we offered it for free. The last impression I want is for parents to feel as if they've got to bring their wallets every time they come to our Studio. Can't wait for the next movie!
My Judo teacher, Mr. Chris Veziris, will again be coming to MVKS to teach us "the gentle way". Mr. Veziris holds a 6th degree Black Belt in Kodokan Judo and is just simply an awesome teacher! There are still spots available, so sign up today! Note: The seminar has been postponed for March, new date will be announced. Cost for the seminar is $25 per person. See you there.
Bring a friend to class for free all week during week 3 this cycle, Feb 20-25. All buddies must have a signed invitation or they will not be able to participate.
The semi-annual Black Belt Pre-Test is scheduled for Saturday, February 18th. All 1st degree Brown Belts with the minimum stripes (5) and points (50) are encouraged to attend. Testing is on all material White Belt through Green Belt. Students who pass will begin their Black Belt testing March 11th. Good luck?
Kickphotos USA will be coming for martial arts picture day. Date and time TBA. Visit their web site, www.kickphotosusa.com to see their work and previous MVKS photos.
There will be no day classes held during the week of school vacation, February 27 - March 3.
With stormy weather here, please call the Studio one hour before your scheduled class if you are not sure if classes will be held. If the answering machine doesn't say we're closed, we're open! Announcements will also be made on the WZID radio station, FM 95.7
Our summer camp has been filled and we have a waiting list with 6 students on it for a potential 2nd week. If we can get ten, we see if we can do another week. I'll leave the sign up sheet up until 03/01/06.

On
Rank and Responsibility...As I mentioned earlier in the newsletter, I was promoted to 5th degree Black Belt by my Instructor, Mr. Steve White. Nobody has had a bigger impact on my life than him, and I am honored to hold this rank from him. In my opinion I have only had three strong references as to what that rank stands for. Those references are Mr. Wedlake, who was a 5th degree when I first met him, Mr. White himself, and my good friend Dr. Len Brassard. I will do everything I possibly can to uphold the standards that these fine men have set for this rank. It is my sincere hope that this promise resonates with every member of MVKS and the ranks they have earned from me.
I just got a new shipment of gold stars, so if you've got a great report card, bring it in! We give gold stars for all A's or the equivalent of. Nothing I like to see more than a kid with lots of gold stars on their uniform!
