Buddy Week was successful on many levels

During the week of Sept 12th thru the 17th MVKS students brought friends to class to share the karate experience. The week went well as the MVKS buddies learned about the noble origins of the martial arts. Buddies then got to practice with their karate friends as they learned to do some fun blocking and parrying drills, as well as forms and self defense techniques. The best schools are built from within, and of the 14 people who came throughout the week, 3 have decided to join our studio!

I'd like to thank everyone who brought in a friend. Now when these people see martial arts in a movie or on TV, they have an idea of what Karate training is all about, and will think of the fun they had at our school!!

This Month - MVKS Costume Class and Party!!!

One of the more fun events at MVKS has been our annual costume karate class. This year, we are going to have our annual costume class for beginner and intermediate students ( white through green belt ) on Saturday, October 29th from 10:00 - 10:45, and after, we will be having a costume party for all other members from 10:45 - 12:00!!!

There will be fun party games to play, and of course, lots of treats and candy!! Prizes will be awarded for the best costume, funniest costume, and most original costume.

As a reminder, let's keep the costumes family-friendly, so keep the gory stuff at home, and please, no dangerous accessories.

Volunteers are needed to help set up and clean up, as well as bring in tasty treats! See me if you can help, and thanks in advance if you can.

By the way, you just have to see what the teaching staff is dressing up as!!

Hurricane Katrina Fundraiser raised $1,550

On Saturday, September 12, MVKS held a special event, a penny sale, to raise money for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. This idea came from my wife Pamela, who has held these events where she works for people in need and for the tsunami victims from last December.

With less than 2 weeks to prepare, the event went off better than I ever would have imagined. The donations made by MVKS students were, in a word, overwhelming. Donations filled the back room's perimeter, leaving barely enough room for people to sit for the drawings! All in all, over $1550. was raised, and donations were sent to the Red Cross. Thanks to everyone who helped make this event a success!! You guys really came through!!

 - in my opinion...

Parents - You're Officially on Notice

When someone's kid first joins our school, parents are shown the seating area where I encourage them to watch our classes in the hopes that what we are teaching is reinforcing the values that you teach at home. They are also shown the lobby as a place to go if they need some quiet time to read or work while their kid is in class. From here on out, parents who are in the classroom seating area will be called out to the floor occasionally to participate with their kids. You may be asked to hold a pad for your kid to hit, or help to practice a self defense technique by throwing a punch or kick for them to defend.

I've always prided myself on having a family karate studio, and I believe this is going to enhance that vision even more. As a parent who trains with my kids, I personally know the value that spending time with your kids doing an activity together has, and I hope to get even more parents to experience this as well.

So be prepared, parents, as you are now on notice to participate with your kids! Parents that are not interested, please feel free to use our lobby while you wait, otherwise, if you're in the classroom, you may be in the class!!

Thank You For Your Promptness

Back in August I had to write a note in the newsletter about the importance of receiving tuition payments on time. At the time, Only 35% of tuitions were being received on time ( before the 7th of each month ). This was creating a real hardship for me as I was unable to pay some of my bills when they were due. I'd like to thank everyone who noticed this and made on time payments in September. We went from 35% to 80%! While ideally I'd love to see 100%, it was nice to see that most of you noticed and made the effort to pay your tuition on time. Here's hoping this will continue (and improve)!  Thank you- JP
