New Black Belts!

Congratulations to Jim Rivard, Neil Berkebile, Jamie Davison, Sam Quimby and Sam Taylor!! They are MVKS' newest Black Belts!! It all began back in February, with a Candidate's Pre-test, followed by 3 monthly exams that concluded in April. In order to promote, these students had to score an 85% or better on each exam. I will be proudly awarding their belts to them on Thursday, May 5th. There will be no BB prep class and no Beg Adult class that evening. Please take a moment and congratulate these students for this very significant accomplishment! While I would love for everyone to join us in the celebration, we simply don't have the space, so the event is for families and friends only. As is tradition, current MVKS Black Belts will be on hand to welcome in the newest members to their class. By the way, this brings our number of active training Black Belts to an all time high of 19!! WOW!!

Black Belt Step Exam

The next Black Belt step exam is scheduled for Saturday, June 4th .All Black Belts that have the minimum point requirements are expected to attend in order to move on to the next step of their training. Black Belts who missed the point requirements will roll over their points in order to qualify for the Fall exam. Material covered will be the last completed set of techniques, as well as some random selections by me. Don't have your points? Scheduling a 1 hr private ( 3pts) or two may help you to qualify.

Kenpo Views

 - in my opinion...

Recently I had a discussion with our kids Black Belt prep class about the process of going from an intermediate level student to an advanced level student. I implored this group of young students to take their training to the next level by picking up the intensity of their practice, and gave gave a demonstration of what I felt advanced students should look like when performing their techniques with one another.

I used an analogy that my teacher told me. He said that you need to think of the Kenpo system as if it were a puzzle. When building a puzzle, we always start with the edge and corner pieces. In Kenpo this would be the foundation we build in the beginner and intermediate classes, with a strong emphasis on the basics, their applications, and many, many repetitions of the beginner forms. Once this foundation is established, a higher challenge is set as students are asked to "fill in" the puzzle. This is where the finer points of the techniques and forms are emphasized. Progress is incremental at best, and a sincere, dedicated effort is the only way to accomplish progress. Patience is tested as the 'picture' we are working on fills in very slowly. The results are the reward, however, as students end up with skills, personal and physical, that can only be obtained by following the process.

"Begin with the end in mind" is another phrase my instructor uses, and having a clear picture of what we want to become takes us a step closer to attaining it. That was my intent for providing that demonstration, and I do not take lightly the responsibility of the example I set every time I'm on the floor.

What does an artist do when his picture is complete? He signs his name.

Kenpo Clues

 - Kenpo questions to help you along...

In the technique Evading the Storm:

For Beginners:

  1. Can you name the first stance of this technique?

For Advanced Students:

  1. This technique provides a suffix for a Yellow Belt technique. Which Yellow Belt technique is that?
  2. Name a similar technique against a left/right punch.

Find more questions and tips for this technique in the library. {MVKS students, please visit the Monthly Techniques in the Student Center.}
