- past and upcoming events |
2004 was THE year for MVKS. It was a year that seemed to signify that the school I had always dreamed of became a reality. Everything didn't just go well, but in fact went better than I might have expected. Here are just some of the things that happened at MVKS in 2004:
-We began the year again by having students write down 3 Karate goals they would like to accomplish in the new year and posted them on the bulletin board for all to see. Some succeeded, some came up short, but hopefully all learned a little about their capabilities.
-Student performance was improved, with the addition of the green star ( web site usage) , gold stripe ( attendance based ), and intent to promote form (success at school and home) programs introduced. Video CDs and technique flash cards were introduced in the pro shop and also helped students achieve their goals.
-Eleven Black Belts!!!!
-Three new 2nd Degree Black Belts!
-Events like street clothes classes, outside classes, family and buddy weeks, family movie night, costume classes, and an obstacle course day helped spice up the curriculum, leaving MVKS students asking when the next big event was.
- Talk about spicy! Experts in their respective fields of Kenpo ( Mr White), Judo ( Mr Veziris), Weaponry ( Mr McLuckie), and Kicking ( Mr Ford), all taught AWESOME seminars at MVKS to the delight of many dedicated students.
-The NECKF went international, hosting guest instructors Gary Ellis and Marc Richards from Plymouth, England at the annual Spring Kenpo Camp in Fitchburg, Ma.
-The 2nd annual Teacher Appreciation Night was held in July, with many MVKS members, friends, and families gathering for a pot luck dinner and a chance to thank our awesome volunteer staff.
-MVKS showed its community spirit and generosity by conducting a break a thon fundraiser for the Mont Vernon Village School and its annual sock, hat, mitten and glove drive for the regions' less fortunate.
A year to be proud of, but continuously improving will make 2005 even better!!
As great and successful 2004 was, please share with me the excitement of trying to improve every facet of the Karate experience at MVKS. Please keep in mind that I am not trying to reinvent the wheel, just make it roll smoother. We will continue to have some of the same events, we just want them to be better. Here are some new things in store for 2005:
- Goal coaches !- In addition to the annual goal cards that are put on the bulletin board this year, groups of students will be assigned a goal coach- a SWAT member that will help to modify your goals to fit your individual needs. These goal coaches will then chart your progress throughout the year and provide insight and advice to help you succeed.
- Summer Camp!- This July parents will have the opportunity to drop their kids off at MVKS for the day for a week full of activities such as swimming, hiking, movies, and of course, Karate! An information packet and sign up form will be available in February.
- Better training methods! A great Karate Studio stays great because of its' dedication to the latest progressive training methods. Look for more innovative and exciting methods to be introduced!
- More training space! - The back room will be transformed into another classroom as the weight equipment will be removed, making the potential for larger classes a blessing, not a curse.

- in my opinion... |
Goal setting and martial arts training go hand in hand. Martial artists don't wait for things to happen for them, they do everything they can to achieve the things that they want. They know that there is no secret to success, only that hard work, preparation, and learning from their mistakes (and others) is the only way to succeed. They understand that the harder they work, the "luckier" they seem to be. They understand that 70% of what they do today is a result of things that they have done or experienced in the past. They understand the importance of taking advantage of every opportunity, and that every new day provides a new opportunity. They understand the importance of looking at life from a "rocking chair" perspective, in that any decision that is made, they can be satisfied with that decision when they are old and grey and sitting in a rocking chair. They are the ones who look at adversity as a chance to define themselves, not to be defined by it. They know the true meaning of success is what you can contribute, not what you can take. That all actions are for the betterment of the team, the family or the group, with individual success coming as a by-product instead of a priority.
Motivated?-You bet they are.
Determined? - Absolutely!
Successful? - One class better, each and every time!!
Until next month - JP
