On Saturday, Sept 18, 16 MVKS Students showed up for the challenge of the now famous MVKS Obstacle Course. Students cheered each other on as they tried to beat their old times and maybe set a new School record. Some dramatic improvement was made as some students cut their previous times from last year in 1/2!
A challenging course, to be sure, as students were required to perform skills based on fitness, balance , coordination, Karate technique, and a little luck.
Lo and behold, a new record was set, by first timer Tom King from the Beginner Kids' class. Tom had a time that will be hard to beat. 1:42!!!! Congratulations Tom!!!
Other top times were as follows:
Int Kids : Emma Downing 1:53
BB Prep : Zachary Peacock 1:56
Tiny Tigers: Tristan Harz 2:51
Beg Adults: Tim Harz 2:41
Wow!!! Check out some pictures and highlights from this event.
A kicking seminar will be held at MVKS on Friday Oct 8th from 7:00 - 8:30 by 3rd Black Belt John Ford, from Riverside TaeKwonDo in Weare, NH. Anyone wishing to improve their kicking skills should attend. There is no fee, but I will put a jar for donations so that Mr. Ford receives some compensation for his time. Mark your calendars!!!
Congratulations to Madeleine Landrum, Jamie Robb, and Irene Robb for passing their 1st of 3 Black Belt tests. These students are "candidates" for Black Belt and will wear a candidates belt: ( 1/2 white - 1/2 Black ). This belt symbolizes that they will be tested on all the material they have learned from White to Black Belt over the next 3 months. These belts have some history, they have been worn ( and signed ) by previous MVKS Black Belts. Wish our candidates luck !!!

On Saturday, Oct 30th, Tiny Tigers, Beginner, and Intermediate students may wear their Halloween costumes for a Spooky self-defense class! Learn how to defend Dracula's bite, or Frankenstein's grab attack! The one thing you won't be able to escape is the fun!!
This has proven to be one of the most fun events at our school, so don't miss it!! Needless to say, wear a costume that you can move around in, and please, no sharp accessories ( knives, sticks, etc. ).
What are YOU going to dress up as? ...

- in my opinion... |
When you call the Studio's phone you'll hear me say that we are the region's BEST Karate Studio. This is not a statement I make lightly. I take great pride in the fact that our Studio is always trying to improve our level of instruction and service to our Students. I proudly say to any new members that we do everything we can to set our Students up to succeed. From offering a free 15 min private to help brush-up on material, to offering " flash cards " in our pro shop that have the rank technique requirements written in detail so you can practice anywhere , to offering a paid private to prepare for a promotion, or to just dust off some older material, to offering video CDs in the pro shop that have streaming video and written descriptions of required rank material. There really is an option for anyone's time or budget. I love it when I can back up what I say.
It recently has come to my attention that there is an incredibly valuable resource available to our Students that virtually 2/3 of our members do not use! That resource is our Schools' website, www.mvkarate.com. You literally have an Instructor at you fingertips anytime you're near your computer. In the Student Center you will find our Student Guide, rank requirement lists with written descriptions of all techniques White to Green Belt, some with tips to help perform the moves better, and some suggested readings to keep you motivated. The cost? - FREE.
Your success is our success, and there is no better reflection of a school than its' students. Until next month........JP

In an effort to increase visits to our web site, starting this month there will be a " hidden" phrase somewhere in the Student Center that will appear when you find a hyperlinked word. Students who come to me (or e-mail me) with the hidden phrase and tell me where they found it will be awarded a green star for their efforts. When a student has earned 5 green stars they will be eligible for a prize from our soon to be filled prize box.
In an effort to promote consistency, students who attend the minimum 2 classes per week for one full 5 week cycle will be recognized with a gold stripe on their belts for their efforts during stripe week should they pass. We have a special, fun, week five curriculum that many people don't get to learn because they don't come back to class after they earn their stripe. Hopefully this will get people in for a 2nd class during week 5.

Beginning next cycle, Students who are eligible to promote will be given a paper to be signed by their parents and teachers that states that they are being good kids and students. Students receiving these forms must have them signed and returned before week 5 starts. No paper - no promotion. We love having good students, we want them to be good outside of the Studio as well!!
