Kenpo News |
- past and upcoming events |
Due to vacations and a lack of time, this is a double issue for July and August. Monthly editions will resume in September.
Guru Al McLuckie visited MVKS for a seminar on escrima sticks on May 12th. For many, it was their first time meeting Mr Mcluckie, and impress them he did! Guru McLuckie is considered by many top people in the Martial arts world to be in a class by himself. We look forward to having him back soon!
Kicks Photo USA came to our Studio May 19th and took photos of our Staff and students. I was very impressed with their professionalism and look forward to putting our Staff photos up as soon as they come in. The photo packs are in, so see me to get yours!

This Month |
There's
nothing like practicing Karate barefoot on the grass in the fresh air! Weather
permitting, classes will be held outside on July 19th and 20th.
You may wear street clothes and sneakers if you wish. Bug spray is recommended.
On Friday, July 30th, MVKS will be hosting its 2nd annual Teacher Appreciation Night. This will be a pot luck dinner, so bring your favorite dish and help me say thanks to our AWESOME teaching staff!! Our Schools' success ( and yours ) is directly related to the volunteer effort these people put in week after week, month after month, and year after year!! Without them, MVKS wouldn't be 1/2 the School it is! These dedicated students realize that to truly understand any subject matter you need to be able to teach it. They commit to helping out an average of 2 to 3 hrs a week of their time not just by assisting w/ classes, but also with all the "little" things that have made MVKS earn its' reputation as a great school! I simply cannot say enough positive things about our staff! So please join me in saying thanks to our staff on Friday, July 30th, from 7:30 - 9:00. Can't make it that night? Be sure to take a moment and thank the following staff members:

- in my opinion... |
Many times a parent will come up to me and thank me for providing instruction to their child that reinforces the values that they try to instill in them at home.
It's all about consistency. If the message being taught at the School is the same one that's been said at home, the chances for success have doubled, simply because of a " birds of a feather " mentality.
Advertisers know this, that's why you may see the same product two or three different times in a grocery store, or the same ad on tv repeatedly. The idea is, that if you see or hear something repeatedly, eventually you may try what is being said or shown to you. It still ultimately comes down to an individual choice, and no one will choose to do what you say or do if they don't think that it applies to them. That's why it's so important for us as parents and teachers to lead by the best example possible. A conflicting message is the surest way to create doubt and failure.
The cool thing is that it works within the school, too. One teacher may not be getting through to a student, only to have another teacher reach them because they presented the same message, only in a different way. I try really hard to have all of our teachers " on the same page " as far as curriculum goes, but encourage their individuality for this very reason. I am very proud of our staff for all the work that they do, and hope you can join me in saying thanks on July 30th. Until next time...JP

- continued |
During the week of August 30th thru September 4th students may bring a family member to class and share the Karate experience. Think of how excited your child will be to practice their kicks with Mom or Dad holding the pads, or practicing a self - defense technique with you.
This week was a lot of fun last year, with many parents saying " Boy, that's harder than it looks!" So come join in the fun! Wear some loose clothing that can stand up to a little pulling and tugging ( and sweating! ), and I hope to see you on the mat!
" When I am gone, I hope that people don't try to traditionalize my Art. I want you to always remember that Kenpo will always be the Art of Perpetual Change. If you remember this, then the Art will never become obsolete because it will change with the times. While the ignorant refuse to study and the intelligent never stop, we should always be mindful of the fact that our reward in life is proportionate to the contributions we make. A true martial artist is not one who fears change, but one who causes it to happen. To live is to change, and to obtain perfection is to have changed often. Progress is a necessity that is a part of nature. While it is true that casting the old aside is not necessary in order to obtain something new, we should study old theories not as means of discrediting them, but to see if they can be modified to improve our present conditions. A word of advice, the humble man makes room for progress, the proud man believes he is already there."
All first degree Brown Belts with the required points and stripes are expected to attend a Black Belt pre-test on Sat., Aug 28th at 12:30. Material covered will be all forms and techniques from White to Green Belt. Students who score a 90% or better will receive a candidates' belt and will begin Black Belt testing in September.
