Break-a-Thon An Amazing Success!

Aspen Sotille shows her community spirit.

On Saturday, March 13th, about 40 MVKS students and their families gathered at the Studio for our most successful fund raising event ever! Our goal was to collectively break 100 boards to raise funds to help the town of Mont Vernon pay for repairs to the Village School roof. Together we raised over $2000.!

After my introduction on the tradition of breaking, MVKS students went to work and demonstrated breaking techniques. Hammerfists, handswords, kicks, elbows, and some in-air and power breaks were done before an entertained and enthusiastic crowd. For many, it was their 1st time and you could just feel their confidence grow with each time they did a break. Afterward, students and families enjoyed pizza and snacks as they reveled in their accomplishments.

I am continuously amazed at our Schools' spirit and would like to thank everyone who helped make this event a success! "Together we all shine!"

The British are Coming, The British Are Coming!
International Kenpo Camp - Friday and Saturday, April 16 and 17

Instructor Gary Ellis, a 7th degree Black Belt and Mark Richards, a 5th degree Black Belt, will be traveling from Plymouth, England to conduct a seminar or two. In addition, Mr. Lee Wedlake, 8th degree, Mr. Steven White, 7th degree, and Dr. Len Brassard, 5th degree, will also be conducting seminars over this two day event.

I personally am very excited to learn from these highly regarded gentlemen from England, as well as look forward to their response from our high-energy New England group ! As I said before, this should be a camp to remember, and early registration should be seriously considered. For more info, download the Camp Invitation, or visit the NECKF website! See you there!

Need a ride? The MVKS Kenpo Carpool leaves at 6:00 pm on Friday and 8:00 am Saturday.

Kenpo Views

 - in my opinion...

"I don't know Karate, how can I help my child practice?"

This is a question I get from you, oh dedicated parent, who comes to class week after week and would like to help their kids get better at this thing we call Kenpo Karate.

First, let me say that if your child is demonstrating a willingness to practice at home, that is the exception, not the rule. Children are masters of "living in the now", and that is why we ask you to be consistent with their attendance and bring them at least twice a week. Our curriculum is designed to develop their skills at this pace. Once this routine is established, sometimes a child discovers the benefit of some extra practice. This should not go unnoticed! High praise and encouragement are in order. Corrections on technique or effort are for their Instructors. Become your child's ally by asking him or her what you could do to help them and above all, have a fun and positive time! Be creative and make up games you could play together. Karate " flash cards" could be made with the names of basics, forms or techniques. Hold a pad for them to hit, or play a blocking game. Need ideas? See me or a Staff member, we'll be glad to help!

By making it fun, you are reinforcing their ever developing self-discipline and enjoying precious time together. Need help on a specific technique or form? Borrow or buy a video or DVD, or, schedule a free ( 15 min ) or paid ( 1/2 hr or hr ) private lesson. " Let the teachers teach" . Until next month.....JP.

By the Way: If you have a forms video, remember to return it so that others may benefit. Thank-you!

Testimonial of the Month!

"I would like to express my sincere appreciation to Mr. Peacock and his entire staff at MVKS for the excellent job they do of teaching the art of Kenpo Karate. It has truly been an awe inspiring experience for me to watch time and time again as Mr. Peacock displays his gift of motivating and inspiring the children and young adults who come into his classroom. It is obvious to me that Jim has a natural teaching ability, in addition to being a master of his craft. MVKS is truly an asset to the entire community in which it serves. I would not hesitate to recommend this school to anyone wishing to learn the art of Kenpo Karate. There are many schools in the area which offer classes in various disciplines, but I am sure you would be hard pressed to find a school with as fine a director as Mr. Jim Peacock."

-Robert Macentee, MVKS Parent

Do YOU have some kind words for us? Has Karate here at MVKS made a difference? Let us know by writing a testimonial! We will post it on our website, as well as our newsletter. See me for more info and thanks in advance.

Thought for the Month

" This is the beginning of a new day. I have been given this day to use as I will. I can waste it, or use it for good, but what I do today is important, because I am exchanging a day in my life for it! When tomorrow comes, this day will be gone forever, leaving in its place something that I have traded for it. I want it to be gain and not loss, good and not evil, success and not failure, in order that I shall not regret the price I have paid for it. I will try just for today, for you never fail until you stop trying."
