On Saturday, Feb 21st, about 11 MVKS members joined my Judo instructor, Mr Chris Veziris for a Judo seminar entitled " Judo Counters to Kenpo Entries". This seminar was to complement the fantastic seminar that Mr. White held here last month.
After some basic instruction on falls and rolls, Mr Veziris taught the class a throwing technique called Koshi Guruma. This throw is very similar to the attack that we defend against in the technique Grip of Death. The class then started to do the technique Grip of Death, only to learn a Judo counter for it called O Ouchi Gari.
Our school is very curriculum driven and seminars like this are a great way for students to enhance their studies and improve their overall performance. It is truly an honor and a privilege for me to offer the students of MVKS an opportunity to train with someone of Mr Veziris' caliber.
Thanks to all who supported this event and thank-you, Mr Veziris, for providing us the experience! We look forward to having you back!
This Spring's Kenpo Camp will be a two-day event held at Dr Len's School in Fitchburg, Ma on April 16th and 17th. This will certainly be a camp to remember as the instruction will have an international flair to it. Instructor Gary Ellis, a 7th degree Black Belt and Mark Richards, a 5th Degree Black Belt, will be traveling from Plymouth, England to conduct a seminar or two. In addition, Mr. Lee Wedlake, 8th degree, Mr. Steven White, 7th degree, and Dr. Len Brassard, 5th degree, will also be conducting seminars.
I personally am very excited to learn from these highly regarded gentlemen from England, as well as look forward to their response from our high-energy New England group ! As I said before, this should be a camp to remember, and early registration should be seriously considered. For more info, download the Camp Invitation, or visit the NECKF website! See you there!
Once again, I have been asked by the Mont Vernon town clerk to please remind everyone that there is no parking in the McCollom building parking lot on Monday and Wednesday evenings, so that the clerks office can conduct its business and townspeople can park. Students on those class nights can be dropped off and picked up in the parking lot, but parking must be done across the street to the right of the fire station. I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and thank you for your cooperation in this matter. I have been informed that violators of this rule may be ticketed!
Beginning Wednesday, March 17th, we will be adding a class for our Tiny Tiger students. Class time will be from 6:00 - 6:30 pm. Students can choose any of the two weekly classes, or attend both. This should help out the Moms and Dads who might want to get away for the weekend once in a while!

- in my opinion... |
From the beginning, I have always let mouthpieces be an optional piece of equipment for sparring classes. I never liked them simply because I couldn't breathe as well with one. Due to an unfortunate accident, I will no longer allow anyone to spar without one. Furthermore, I would like to remind everybody that the equipment that the school provides is there for people who may have forgotten their own equipment that night, or as a temporary use item until said person purchases their own set. By the time someone reaches the rank of Blue belt they should own their own set. This way proper fit is ensured, thus making for a safer experience. If you have a set of gear at the school, please TAKE IT HOME WITH YOU! Or, keep it in your gear bag so that it will always be there when you need it. Please note that if you are relying on the schools' equipment to spar, and what you are using does not fit properly, you will not be allowed to spar that night. Hopefully in a couple of months more people will have their own gear and this will be less of a problem. Sparring gear will be the featured sale item of the month, so don't delay, order yours today! Until next month.....JP

Forgot how to do your form? Can't remember the technique that you did last week? Our schools' web site now has streaming video available in the Students Center! Now you can see how the moves are done and train with Mr. Peacock while you're at home. Although a video can't replace the value and depth that a private lesson could , it's a great way to brush up on your material from the convenience of your own home!
Check out the new videos (student login required)
More than anything, you want your kid to succeed at Karate. But oftentimes, you're not sure what you can do to help. MVKS is in the process of developing a Parents Guide and a Parents Center on our web site and we need your help! The purpose of this guide is to answer many of the FAQs that arise during your child's training. Questions such as: How can I help my child practice? Should my child practice at home? How often and how long? Are just a few examples. Do you have a question for us? Please send an email with your questions, and I will reply promptly. Your input will be a valuable contribution to make the Parents Guide a success. Thanks!
Our webmaster, Gabi van Tassell, offers photo CDs of special events and promotions for the low cost of $9.99! See me to order yours!
Our
annual fundraising efforts will be focused closer to home this year, as we will
be collectively breaking 100 boards to help raise money for the repair of the
Mont Vernon village school roof, which was damaged from snow and ice storms this
year. The date for the Break-A-Thon will be Saturday, March 13th
at 1:00 pm. The volunteer effort has been great and I look forward to seeing us
meet, or beat, our goal of $2000!
"Both my 6 year old son and my husband attend classes at MVKS and are thoroughly enjoying it. Mr. Peacock is a kind, caring, and understanding teacher, especially where the children are concerned. He exercises their minds, as well as their bodies, promoting confidence, self-discipline, and a healthy appreciation for accomplishments won through hard work and practice. Many thanks, Mr. Peacock, I'm glad that we found you!"
