When was the last time you went to a movie and everybody cheered? For me it has been quite some time, but that was the case at the MVKS's first movie night.
Close to 50 people came to MVKS on Friday, August 15, to watch "The Karate Kid", some for the first time. I personally had forgotten what a good movie this was. I was also glad to have shared the experience with my kids.
Although the music and clothing linked me (and others) to the eighties, the lessons of friendship and martial arts training are timeless and will never grow old. I hope you all enjoyed this night as much as I did and will look forward to a double feature day coming up this winter (just in time for that special shopping season!).
A very special thanks to the Hayden family for the movie, the Robb family for the use of their projector, the Quimby and Herrick family for the projection screen (read: back-up plan), and to Mr. White for the last minute PC speakers! Also a special thanks to Pam Caiado and everybody else who stayed after to clean. This was definitely one of the better special events we've had at MVKS. Thanks for coming!!!
On Saturday, August 16, nine eligible 1st degree Brown Belts took a pre-test to qualify for their Black Belt Candidacy rank. All nine students were tested on material from White Belt to Green Belt and needed to score a 95% or better to qualify for the Black Belt testing process beginning September 13.
It is with great pleasure to announce that ALL nine students passed ans will be taking their 1st of 3 Black Belt exams on September 13! Congrats to Kayla Hill, Jordan Hill, Manny Caiado, Nathan Foreman, Ryan Jones, Chris Jones, Cathy Jones, Colin Robb and Sam Dawson. They will all be wearing a Black Belt Candidates' Belt, 1/2 white, 1/2 black (signifying they are covering the whole system, White to Black Belt), which many of our current Black Belts have worn in the past.
If you see one of these students, please wish them well on their testing, and offer some help if you'd like. Im sure they'll appreciate the support.

Am I Ready to Promote?
So you've checked your attendance card and you've got a few gold stickers and your minimum class points are within reach. You're on your last set of self-defense techniques and, the last time you ran your form you could do it start to finish. All signs are pointing to your promotion at the end of this cycle. But wait, you say you don't thing you're ready to move up, that you would like more time to perfect those few moves that have eluded you since you got your last belt. You simply feel you aren't ready to learn anything new yet.
As any serious Kenpoist, they'll tell you there's ALWAYS SOMETHING they wish they could do better! Most people would like to have ALL their material perfect before they promote, but that just isn't the way Karate training is. Some techniques aren't performed the way they're supposed to be until years of practice have been put in. I like to call this the "Digestive Process".
So, the next time you say to yourself "Gee, I'm not good enough to be a Blue Belt", I say to you this: "Have you ever been a Blue Belt before?" Until next month ... JP

"That's a lot harder than it looks!" was the common statement after a week of classes were shared with Moms, Dads, sons, daughters of MVKS students. We wanted you to see, firsthand, what it's like to training in Karate instead of being a spectator. Smiles and laughter were plentiful as the Karate experience was shared by many. Some of you even joined! All in all, it was a great week and many of our "family members have gained a new appreciation for what goes on out there on the training floor. Thanks to all who participated in class and for the support you showed by attending.
I am very pleased to announce that MVKS will be offering day classes beginning September 8th. This will be a Beginner-based class for homeschooled kids and stay-at-home Moms and Dads. Classes are Monday and Thursday, 10:30-11:15.

In my opinion, the best schools are build from within. That is why we like to reqard our students who refer someone to our school with a coupon equal to one months' tuition of a new members' agreement. It's a win-win for everyone, because the student gets to share the experience with a friend, the freind gets to enjoy something without going it alone, and MVKS gets another Black Belt in the making!
These referrals are accepted (and appreciated) throughout the year, but twice a year we devote an entire week to them. That's right, BUDDY WEEK is coming!
During the week of September 15-20, MVKS members may bring a friend to train with them for free for a week! Look for Buddy Week papers to be handed out by Mr. Peacock soon and bring a friend or three. To sweeten the deal, the students who gets the buddies to join will receive a cash prize of $75! Ties will be split evenly between all winners. Thank you in advance for your support on this event.
On Saturday, September 27, MVKS students will gather on the lawn from 10:00 - 12:30 to compete against themselves in the now famours MVKS obstacle course. Can you beat your best time? Did you miss the last one? Either way, come for some fun and challenges as we try to squeak another day of outside training before the cold weather hits!
September 1st is almost her, so it's time to go to the goal board to see how you're doing. Did you accomplish what you wanted? Did you come up short? Or did you forget? Whatever the result, this is a great opportunity to learn about yourself and how to set and accomplish goals. If you did what you wanted, was it too easy? Came up short? Maybe it was too hard, or you let an obstacle stand in your way? Now is the time to evaluated and motivate. Don't give up - team up if you have to! Remind yourslef how important these goals were back in January. Be honest with yourself and hopefully you'll be happy with your accomplishments. Good luck!
