Flying side kicks, forms, pushups, noodle balance, ball kicking, hoop shoot - are you kiddin' me? - noodle golf, self-defense technique jumping jacks between sticks, forward roll, balance beam, tire run - tired yet? - jump rope, MORE pushups, 1/2 squats, focus pad weave, and finally the water balloon break! NOW, THAT'S AN OBSTACLE COURSE!
Over the course of 3 very hot days, MVKS students tested their mettle and cheered each other on in this very challenging course. What was your best time? Time to beat:
Beginner kids :
Anna Ballard 2:07
Intermediate kids: Eric Hayden 2:41
Black Belt prep kids: Madeleine Landrum 2:31
Adults: Carson Henry 2:27
Black Belts: Aleka Chouramanis 2:41
Great times everyone!
You're all winners for trying your best! We'll do it again in the fall.
The Mont Vernon Board of Selectman have reminded me that there is to be no parking in the McCollum parking lot on Monday and Wednesday night. Sorry for any inconvenience this causes.

The Importance of Practice
(from Mr. White's newsletter)
The people we know as masters don't devote themselves to their particular skill just tto get better at it. The truth is, they love to practice - and because of this, they do get better. And then, to complete the circle, the better they get, the more they enjoy performing the basic moves over and over again.
To practice regularly, even when you seem to be going nowhere, might seem at first onerous. But the day eventually comes when practicing becomes a treasured part of your life. You settle into it as if it were your favorite easy chair, unaware of time and turbulence of the world. It will still be there tomorrow, it will never go away.
For one who is on the masters' journey, practice is best conceived as a noun, not as something you do, but as something you have, something you are. It might eventually make you a winner in your chosen field, if that's what you're looking for, and then people will refer to you as a master. But that's not really the point. What is mastery? At the heart of it, master is practice.
"When advancing, same foot, same hand, when retreating, opposite foot, opposite hand."

... I fall behind in classes?
... I need help in learning a form, working on a kick, have trouble sparring?
... I want to brush upon my material before stripe week?
It's easy. Schedule a private lesson! Whether you choose a free 15 min private with any staff member, or a paid 1/2 hour or full hour with Mr. Peacock, a private lesson is the best way to stay on track and reach your goals. It can be one on one, or shared with a friend or two. Any way you look at it, a private lesson is a great opportunity to get better at your Kenpo!

In the technique Checking the Storm, the left front kick to the groin teaches you a basic rule. What rule is that?

On June 20, over 35 people attended the 1st annual Teacher Appreciation Nite at MVKS. These nice people took the time to come and say thanks to our awesome teaching staff and got a chace to get to know them better. There was LOTS of delicious food on hand, and a great time was had by all.
In addition, we awarded some teacher appreciation certificates. Mr. John Coughlin Sr was presented with a white teacher's top, signifying he is now a level 1 Instructor, and - surprise! - Mr. Ian Herrick was awarded his 2nd Degree Black Belt!
Thanks to everyone who attended and made this night a success!
On Wednesday, July 16, over 30 hardy students donned their sparring gear for a night of Beginners versus Advanced sparring competition! The idea was to give Beginner students a little taste of sparring, some for the first time, with their favorite instructor and higher ranking students of MVKS. The advanced students were very helpful in this introduction for some, and were challenged in other ways by having to spar with one hand behind their backs or by limiting their abilities (no kicks!). All in all, the night was a BIG success, and everyone is looking forward to Spar Wars II!!!
