Back to Lineage / Ed Parker / Lee Wedlake / Steve White / Jim Peacock

Kenpo Creed

"I come to you with only karate, empty hands. I have no weapons, but should I be forced to defend myself, my principles, or my honor; should it be a matter of life or death, of right or wrong; then here are my weapons, karate, my empty hands."

-Ed Parker

The Ed Parker I knew

The Ed Parker that I knew was in a word, a showman with a "Hollywood" flair to his teaching approach. He always started by saying that we would leave his seminars with a slanted forehead, from striking it with our palms in a "Gee, why didn't I think of that?" gesture. He was a true entertainer, always with a story or fable to tell.

He could make you laugh, but more importantly he was an educator on every level. Never one to "give" his secrets away, he would leave you with clues to his system, almost toying with you, to encourage independent thinking, as well as to see what level you understood his complex system of self-defense. I only wish I knew and appreciated then what I know now - and am still learning - about his system to be.
